A Möbius for Mulva

I looked at artwork from many different artists and even contacted a couple of others, but in the end I always came back to David's work which I liked the best. I think David's sculptures define the space as an art and cultural center. Miriam Mulva

Technically challenging sculpture based on the Mobius strip

David Harber has created four new sculptures for the Mulva Cultural Center, the newest cultural destination in Midwestern USA, housed in a dramatic, contemporary, 75,000 square foot space designed by famed architects SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP).

Mulva is a showcase for creative arts and cultural programmes. It is the brainchild of generous benefactors James J. and Miriam B. Mulva who have always been interested and supportive of the communities in which they live.

The 3m tall Mobius sculpture makes an imposing statement at the east entrance to the Center. Technically challenging to engineer and manufacture, Mobius is inspired by the mathematically mystifying Möbius strip – an infinite loop with a half-twist that reflects David Harber's fascination with delightful illusions.

I liked the infinity aspect of Mobius, as art should also be a timeless journey.

Geminus sculpture with orange interior

Other Harber sculptures at Mulva include a 7 foot Geminus sphere in mirror polished stainless steel with a contrasting hot red interior and a classic Mantle II. An Alveare screen sculpture is installed in the Center's outside seating area and really comes alive at night with LED lighting and flickering flames.

Could art enhance your project?

Current exhibitions at the center are Brick-tionary featuring 50 custom-built models created by lego artist Brickman and his team, with interactive build zones for families; and in the atrium, Picturing America’s Pastime: A Snapshot of the Photograph Collection at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
